Black Forest Cake

Servings : Serves 6 to 8 People

Equipment needed : Cake board, acetate paper, stand mixer or hand mixer with a large bowl, bent spoon, piping bag


3 Round 8″ chocolate cakes (refer to my chocolate cake recipe) 

2 Cans cherry pie filling

Whipped Cream Filling & Topping

4 Cups Cool Whip

2 Packages cream cheese, softened

1/2 Cup white sugar


Fresh cherries

Chocolate shavings


  1. Prepare the 3 round chocolate cakes as per my recipe.
  2. Whipped cream filling & topping: In a stand mixer or a hand mixer with a large bowl, place the softened cream cheese and beat until creamy.
  3. Add the Cool Whip and white sugar and beat until well combined and fluffy.  Set aside.
  4. To assemble: On a cake board place the first layer of chocolate cake, then using the acetate paper cover the outside of the cake to make a cylinder, using  tape to hold it closed.
  5. Fill a piping bag with the whipped cream filling and pipe the filling onto the chocolate cake inside the acetate cylinder, cover the sides first, then the centre.
  6. Next, using the bent spoon spread the filling evenly all around.
  7. Spoon the cherry pie filling onto the whipped cream, spreading evenly all over.
  8. Place the next chocolate cake layer on top of the cherry filling.
  9. Repeat steps (e) to (h).
  10. On top of the final cake layer, pipe the last layer of cream filling thinly, spreading evenly all over with the bent spoon.
  11. Place the cake in the fridge for 1 hour or overnight to allow the cake to firm before removing the acetate paper.
  12. Take the cake out of the refrigerator and carefully remove the tape from the acetate paper.  Peel it away from the sides of the cake.
  13. Fill the piping bag with more whipped topping and decorate the top of the cake as you desire.
  14. Add the fresh cherries and chocolate shavings.
