Caramel Apple Pie

Servings : 6 to 8

2 x Prepared pie crusts

5 Large apples (Granny Smith or other), peeled and thinly sliced

1/2 Lemon

1 1/2 tsp Cinnamon

1/4 tsp Nutmeg

1/2 tsp Salt

1 Tbsp all purpose flour

1/4 Cup brown sugar

½  Cup white sugar

Caramel sauce for drizzle

1 Egg

1 tsp White sugar to sprinkle on top

1/2 tsp Cinnamon to sprinkle on top

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Place your prepared pie crust into a pie dish and put it into the oven for about 5 minutes.
  3. Place the apple slices in a large bowl and juice half a lemon over, then mix to coat, this prevents browning of the apples.
  4. In another bowl mix together the dry ingredients (cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, flour, brown sugar and white sugar, mix together.
  5. Pour the dry ingredients over the sliced apples and mix to combine.
  6. Place the apple mixture into the pie crust which you removed from the oven and spread evenly.
  7. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the top of the apples, then place the other pie crust over the top and pinch the edges of the two pie crusts together all around the pie dish.
  8. Make slits in the top of the crust to allow for the steam to escape.
  9. Whisk the egg and, using a basting brush, coat the top of the pie crust with the egg, and sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon over.
  10. Place in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes, check the doneness of the apples by poking through the slits in the top, then remove from the oven when ready.
