Homemade Chilli

Servings : 4 to 6

2 Tbsp olive oil

2 Onions, diced

3 Cloves of garlic, minced

3 tsp Ground cumin

2 lbs (1kg) Ground beef

2 Tbsp chilli powder

1 tsp Cinnamon

Pinch of salt

1 Tbsp cacao powder

1 Large can of diced tomatoes (do not drain)

1 1/2 Cups beef stock

1 1/2 Cans tomato sauce

2 Cans white beans, drained and rinsed

  1. On the stovetop, heat the olive oil on medium heat, and add the onions and garlic.  Cook for about 7 to 8 minutes until softened and golden, stirring regularly.
  2. Add the cumin to the onions and cook for another 2 minutes, stirring.
  3. Turn the heat up to medium high, and add the ground beef, breaking up the lumps with a spoon as it cooks.  Cook until there is no pink left.
  4. Add the chilli powder, cinnamon, salt and cocoa powder, stirring until well mixed.
  5. Reduce the heat back to medium and add the can of diced tomatoes, beef stock and the 1 ½ cans of tomato sauce, mixing everything together.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a lid and allow to simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  7. At about 20 minutes into the simmering, add the can of drained, rinsed white beans, put the lid back on and continue simmering for the last 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. When the cooking time is nearly up, remove the lid from the pot and allow it to cook uncovered for the last 4 minutes.
  9. When it is ready, turn the stovetop off and serve.
